What we will do on this route

In this third stage of the Spirititual Variant, we will make the boat section from Vilanova de Arousa to Pontecesures, which is only 1km from Padrón and 25 km from Santiago de Compostela.

This Xacobean route of the Arousa Sea and Ulla River, is also known as La Traslatio, name given to the transfer of the remains of the Apostle Santiago from Jerusalem to Santiago de Compostela. First, at the beginning of the route, we will be welcomed by the mussel rafts, wooden platforms where this precious mollusk is cultivated. We will approach to learn a little about its production process. Then, continuing our journey we will find the Briñas Islands, the Malveiras Islands and the Cortegada Island.

These islands belong to the National Park of the Atlantic Islands, where we will find some of the 17 “cruceiros” that form a unique maritime fluvial Way of the Cross to Pontecesures.

We will see the first crossings and then we will enter the waters of the Ulla River.

We will pass through the towns of Bamio, Catoira, Valga and Dodro until we reach Pontecesures.

During the rest of the crossing we will observe the rest of the Cruceiros, the Towers of Catoira and the Viking ships accompanied throughout our route by incredible landscapes and nature. A route in which the tranquility and a landscape that looks like medieval times, will make us arrive full of strength to face our last stage of the Camino de Santiago.
